Why L-Carnitine? Sponsored by PERQUE Integrative Health

If you are working to maintain a healthy weight, L-Carnitine is a nutrient you should get to know. You can think of L-Carnitine’s metabolic role as “shoveling biologic coal (free fats) into the mitochondrial cell furnace.” This increases both fat metabolism and cell energy. Without the “L-Carnitine shovel,” the furance stops burning fat efficiently. Your metabolism slows, fat accumulates and weight is harder to manage.

We get a constant supply of carnitine in our diet, especially if we eat meat. (In fact, the name carnitine is derived from the Latin word for meat.) Most people are able to synthesize sufficient amounts of L-Carnitine from the amino acids methionine and lysine to avoid deficiency. Even vegetarians are thought to produce adequate amounts of carnitine. Even so, supplementation with biologically active L-Carnitine provides uninterrupted essential support for a variety of vital physiologic functions, especially since endogenous carnitine production dips dramatically with age. In addition to transporting long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria, it also plays a prominent role in enhancing exercise performance. L-Carnitine’s cardioprotective role of reducing hypoxia and oxidative stress can be very helpful in conditions like angina and myocardial infarction.

L-Carnitine's role in fat metabolism leads it to affect, to some degree, all the other energy metabolism functions in the cell, including the burning of carbohydrates. This means L-Carnitine can be helpful in supporting glucose metabolism and addressing insulin and Metabolic Syndrome.

The benefits of carnitine in supporting healthy aging have recently been reconfirmed in a well-done European study. The study shows L-Carnitine is an important contributor to cellular energy metabolism. Centenarians are characterized by weakness, decreasing mental health, impaired mobility and poor endurance. L-Carnitine is an important contributor to cellular energy function and reduces fatigue in seniors.

In the study, 66 centenarians (>100 years) who were suffering from fatigue after even slight physical activity were randomized to receive either placebo or carnitine (L-carnitine, levocarnitine 2 gm/day orally) for 6 months and were followed up for a further 6 months.

The treatment group showed significant improvements in mental and physical fatigue (both P<0.001) and walking distance (P<0.001) and were associated with an increase in lean mass (P<0.01).

Furthermore, supplementation in the elderly, as part of an alkaline way lifestyle program may stimulate osteoblast activity and promote age-related bone building.

PERQUE MDP Plus Guard is an example of PERQUE’s commitment to providing comprehensive nutritional support. In addition to 500 mg of L-carnitine in the preferred fumarate form, each dose delivers the benefits of GABA and kelp alginate plus MCT to optimize absorption.

Detoxifying the body of unwanted and harmful toxins is key for effective weight management. In addition, hormonal systems in the body affect the rate of weight loss or gain. PERQUE MDP Plus Guard has a special kelp extract that helps detoxify, but also gives the required thyroid hormone support that is synergistic in weight management.

Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) micellize PERQUE MDP Plus Guard for better L-carnitine uptake and bioactivity. Since MCTs also tend to provide a feeling of satiety, they enhance the weight management role of the product. Weight reduction is associated with changes in neuronal activity and PERQUE addresses this issue by adding Gamma Amino Butyric Acid (GABA) in this formulation. GABA functions as a calming neurotransmitter, required for brain metabolism. GABA calms neuron activity and protects from over firing, reducing anxiety and stress levels.

For enhanced nutritional support during weight management, PERQUE Glucose Regulation Guard can be an important addition. Similarly, for enhanced workout recovery, PERQUE Endura/PAK Guard can be added to the protocol. For improved cardiac protection, PERQUE Mito Guard Plus can make the required difference, and PERQUE Vessel Health Guard can be added for homocysteine management.

Since inventing the world’s first single step amplified (ELISA) procedure in 1984, a process for measuring and monitoring all delayed allergies, Jaffe has continually sought new ways to help speed the transition from our current healthcare system’s symptom reactive model to a more functionally integrated, effective, and compassionate system. PIH is the outcome of years of Jaffe’s scientific research. It brings to market 3 decades of rethinking safer, more effective, novel, and proprietary dietary supplements, supplement delivery systems, diagnostic testing, and validation studies.
